You are much more likely to commit to a spiritual practice if you have a place you love to do it, and practice at the same time every day. Early morning works for me, before anyone else is up in my house. I love starting my day from a calm, peaceful and centered place. I highly reccomend even a short meditation in the morning to all my students. The other great thing is that you don’t have your meditation hanging over your head creating more stress for you. Stressing about your meditation feels really counterproductive, doesn’t it?
A sacred space can be as simple or elaborate as you want, and is 100% dependant on what feels right to you. Some people choose to set up an alter with all of their favorite spiritual items, and some people pick a favorite spot on the couch and practice there every day. The best part is there is no right or wrong way.
When I first started meditating I sat on the edge of my tub. There was a little step there and I put a towel behind my back and under my tush. I don’t know what attracted me to that spot, but I used it for a while until I migrated to my closet. For a long time I meditated in my closet every morning sitting on yoga blocks in the dark. It was my little coccoon and I felt so cozy in there. I began collecting items on my dresser that made me feel good, such as books I enjoyed, crystals and art from my kids. All of a sudden I had a little alter.
When I began teaching meditation and doing coaching, I turned the front room of my home into a little “zen den” teaching space. It is my favorite room in the house, and my dogs and kids love it in there too! It is filled with special objects and has an amazing energy. My students absolutely love it and don’t want to leave. I wanted to share a few pics with you to give you a little glimpse into where I teach and live.
Keep in mind, that this evolved over many years, and teaching meditation is my profession. My hope is that my sacred space inspires you to make yours special in even one small way. Maybe having a beautiful smelling essential oil close by to use during your meditation, or one book you like to read a page from each day, or a candle to light…remember anything goes.
Let me know in the comments what makes your spiritual space special to you.
